Itinerary

Day 1: Brisbane, Coffs Harbour

After setting off from Brisbane, enjoy lunch on board the Great Southern train and a relaxing afternoon settling in to your luxurious private cabin before arriving at the NSW coastal town of Coffs Harbour. As the sun dips beneath the horizon, enjoy a unique beachside dinner where you’ll feast on local produce and fresh seafood matched with fine wines, while the waves lap at the shore nearby. After a few leisurely hours, you’ll reboard the train and set off for the night.

Day 2: Hunter Valley, Newcastle, Port Stephens

Freedom of Choice: Today, choose from four fascinating local experiences.

The first option is to meander through the picturesque and historic vineyards of the Hunter Valley, where you can sample wines from both world-renowned brands and boutique cellar doors. Your day will include cellar door experiences and a sumptuous lunch. 

Alternatively, discover Port Stephens by land. Experience the impressive Stockton Bight Sand Dunes and beach by 4WD van, stopping to hunt for pipis and driving to the top of a sand dune to take in the incredible views. Afterwards, enjoy a relaxed lunch before heading back to the train in the afternoon.

You might also choose to explore Port Stephens by sea. Enjoy the stunning views of Port Stephens with a relaxed morning of sailing on the water and the chance to spot dolphins along the way. Afterwards, enjoy a relaxed lunch before heading back to the train in the afternoon. 

Or choose to see Newcastle in depth. Discover the vibrant mix of old and new in the beautiful coastal city of Newcastle with a fun and informative two-hour guided walking tour before lunch. In the afternoon enjoy an hour of free time by the beach or in town.

In the evening, return to the train to enjoy a regionally-inspired meal prepared on board before retiring for the night.

Day 3: Regional Victoria or Melbourne

Today, choose to explore the Victorian countryside or immerse yourself in the vibrant, culturally rich capital of Melbourne.

Freedom of Choice: Your Victoria High Country tour gives you the chance to discover regional Victoria, with options including wine touring and gourmet delights, visits to natural sights and charming towns. 

Alternatively, visit cosmopolitan Melbourne, take in the soaring views from the Eureka Skydeck, almost 300 metres above the city, and tour the outstanding art collections of the National Gallery of Victoria.

Day 4: Adelaide, Adelaide Hills

As the train rolls into Adelaide, enjoy your last breakfast on board and the end of your Great Southern train journey. You will be met by your APT Driver-Guide and enjoy a tour of Adelaide. This afternoon, check-in to your luxurious boutique hotel in the Adelaide Hills. A special welcome dinner will be served at the nearby Hardy’s Verandah Restaurant, which has a Three Chef Hat rating.

Day 5: Clare Valley, Wilpena Pound

This morning you’ll set off for the Flinders Ranges, travelling through the wine-growing district of the Clare Valley. Continue to the natural amphitheatre of Wilpena Pound. Set among river red gums and native pines, Ikari Safari Camp is the perfect base for exploring Wilpena Pound National Park.

Day 6: Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park

This morning, set out on a walk to explore the incredible natural surrounds of Wilpena Pound before continuing to the geological sites of Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges. Keep an eye out for the endangered yellow-footed rock-wallaby as you explore the quartzite-ridged gorges. This evening, enjoy dinner back at your safari camp, before retreating to your deck with relaxing vistas of the bush.

Day 7: Wilpena Pound, Barossa Valley

Enjoy the morning to relax at Wilpena Pound. Check in to The Louise, a luxurious retreat nestled in the heart of the Barossa Valley and boasting sensational panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards.

Day 8: Barossa Valley

Today call in to Maggie Beer's Farm Shop adjacent to the famous cook’s Barossa Valley Pheasant Farm. Continue on to the iconic St Hugo Winery, First, you sample four wines and then stroll through the Kitchen Garden, where the executive chef will explain St Hugo’s food philosophy. Enjoy a two-course lunch paired with wines, and then spend the rest of the afternoon and evening at leisure.

Day 9: Barossa Valley

This morning, visit Menglers Hill Lookout and Barossa Sculpture Park and take in the spectacular view over the Barossa Valley. Continue on to Tenunda to enjoy free time. You may want to visit shops selling local produce or visit a local cellar. Afterwards, you’ll drive along the iconic avenue of date palms leading to Seppeltsfield Winery for a tour and tasting at this sprawling estate, which features heritage-listed architecture, spectacular gardens and 420 acres of vineyards. This will be followed by a three-course farewell lunch at Fino Seppeltsfield – with wine pairing, of course.

Day 10: Adelaide
